Mauna Kea, Hawaii

March 11th, 2010 . by admin

In this day and age it is becoming harder and harder to find locations where the sky is still dark. “Dark sky” is important to stargazers because the darker it is the more you can see. One of the best tropical destinations for star watching is Mauna Kea, Hawaii. In Mauna Kea there is a cluster of really strong telescopes built on the top of the mountain. Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world when measured from the sea floor. There was much controversy over whether they were going to build the telescopes or not just because the Hawaiian people thought that it violated the spirit of the island by putting the eleven telescopes at the top of the summit. So if you really enjoy stargazing then you might want to take a guided tour of the eleven telescopes. Make sure that you make an appointment to be on a tour because you can only see these telescopes by renting a four wheel drive vehicle or by guided tour.
